Water heaters are an essential appliance in your home, especially as you prepare for the winter season; however, most people are unaware of the key signs that their water heater is failing. As a 24 hour plumber in Atlanta, we are here to help you recognize those signs before your water heater breaks down and causes you unnecessary stress! Here are 5 signs that you need a new water heater:

  1. Low quantity of hot water – Nothing is worse than your water turning cold mid-shower! If you turn on the hot water and it turns lukewarm or cold after a short period of time, then your water heater is likely failing. Your water tank is constantly heating, so when you select hot water in your kitchen, shower, or other room, the water should not quickly transition from hot to cold. If it does, it is a key sign that your water heater needs to be replaced.
  2. Rust-Corrosion – It’s important to keep a close eye on all of your plumbing appliances. Some water heaters are located inside the home, while others are located underneath to prevent leakage. Wherever your water heater is located, you should check it frequently for rust-corrosion. Rust-corrosion causes your metal water heater to deteriorate, and could potentially result in leakage. If you see signs of rusting on your water heater, it is probably time for a new one!
  3. Over 12 years old – Most people have no idea how old their water heater is. Water heaters, like any other household appliance, have an expected expiration date. You can locate the age of your water heater on the manufacturer’s sticker, which is usually on the top of your water heater. If you discover that your water heater is over 12 years old, you should start looking for signs of deterioration and consider replacing it.
  4. Discolored hot water – Brown, rusty water is the last thing you want to see when washing your dishes or your hair! This discoloration is due to corrosion inside your water heater. Your hot water might also have a metallic taste, as the corrosion causes the metal to deteriorate into small enough particles that can fit inside your pipes. Discolored water is a sign of your water heater’s potential failure, so make sure you examine your water frequently.
  5. Noise from the tank – Your water heater will make sounds as it warms, but any cracks, pops, or other loud noises could be an indication of buildup or overheating. Mineral buildup and metal fatigue could potentially lead to leakage and eventual water heater failure. Make sure you watch and listen for unsettling sounds, and once you hear them, consider replacing your water heater!

Water heaters are a modern convenience, but sometimes they require a little TLC. Once you become familiar with these signs, you will be a water heater expert in no time. If you are still unsure if your water heater needs to be replaced, we are a plumber near Atlanta and we are always happy to help you!
