How to Unclog a Main Sewer Line Without a Cleanout

Atlanta Main Sewer Line Cleanout

Clogged sewer lines are a homeowner’s worst nightmare. A blocked sewer line can cause your toilet to back up, your drains to overflow, and can lead to some seriously nasty odors and mess in your home. If the clog is bad enough, it can cause major backups and extensive damage. If you have a main sewer line clog, it’s important to act fast—just remember to always exercise caution when working with plumbing fixtures and be sure to contact a professional if you’re unsure about anything.

What Causes Main Sewer Line Clogs?

Before we get into how to unclog your sewer line, let’s first look at what causes this problem in the first place. The most common cause of main sewer line clogs is tree roots. Tree roots are attracted to the damp conditions in sewer lines and will grow into the pipes in search of water. Once tree roots have infiltrated your pipes, they can cause serious blockages that lead to sewage backups. Other causes of main sewer line clogs include grease buildup, feminine hygiene products, and baby wipes.

So, what do you do when you’ve got a clog in your main sewer line? Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clear a main sewer line clog without a professional cleanout.

  1. First things first, try plunging the toilet or sink closest to the main sewer line. Plungers work by creating suction that pulls the clog through the pipe and down the drain. To use a plunger on your sink drain, simply fill the basin with enough water to cover the plunger cup, place the plunger over the drain opening, and push and pull the plunger up and down. You may need to repeat this process several times before you dislodge the clog. If this doesn’t work, move on to step two.
  2. Use a plumber’s snake, or auger, to clear the clog. Drain snakes are long, flexible auge rs that are inserted into the drain and used to physically break up blockages. Drain snakes can be rented from most hardware stores or home improvement centers. Insert the snake or auger into the drain and turn it clockwise until you feel resistance. Then, crank the snake or auger counterclockwise to break through the clog. If this doesn’t work, move on to step three.
  3. Pour a half cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a half cup of vinegar. Let this mixture sit for 15 minutes before flushing with hot water. This method will work for most minor clogs. However, if the clog is still there, move on to step four.
  4. If you’ve tried all of the methods above, and the clog is still not budging, then it’s time to call in a professional plumber from High Priority Plumbing and Services, Inc. We have the tools and experience necessary to clear even the toughest of clogs.
