How That Pesky Dripping Faucet Becomes a Big Problem

Dripping Faucet Service Conyers GA

You have a pesky drip. It keeps you up all night but you have put off fixing it. That can be a big problem.

It’s more than a little water down the drain.

The amount of water accumulates. A dripping faucet can waste thousands of gallons of water annually. From a financial standpoint, that can add up to a significant amount to your water bill. If over a hundred gallons of water a month is wasted doesn’t sound like a lot then think of it as money down the drain. The U.S. Environmental Protection Division estimates that the most prominent leakage issue in the home is caused by a dripping faucet; fixing one can save almost 10% of a homeowner’s water bill.

A dripping faucet is not always an easy fix.

You might be thinking it is easy to fix and you can fix it at any time. That may be the case, but it might not be. The typical reasons a faucet drips are due to corrosion, mineral deposit or defective parts.

Fixing a Faucet

You might only need to replace the gaskets, o-rings, or washers. Why wait? If replacing parts fixes the drip, that is your time and a little bit of cost for parts. But if you ignore it or if replacing these parts doesn’t stop the drip, your problem is not as easy of a fix and will become more costly.

Replacing the Faucet

The problem starts with just a little bit of water. As the water drips continuously it puts pressure on your faucet. The wear and tear can cause your faucet to break much faster than you think. Then you may need to replace the faucet.

Repairing Your Water Line

An even bigger problem, though, is that the pressure of the dripping water may not only be about your faucet. It can be a sign of weakness in your piping. Corroded pipes develop cracks that may interfere with the water pressure and lead to a faucet dripping from time to time. Or you could have the buildup of minerals in your line causing an uneven water pressure. When the water flow is interrupted for periods and then some of the water gets through, it puts pressure on your faucet and causes water to drip.

Whether from corrosion that cracks or causes a leak in the line, or minerals building up, your piping will eventually break. Then you will have a catastrophe on your hands with the cost for repairing or replacing a water line. That’s when your dripping faucet can turn into thousands of dollars in repairs and the headaches that go with it.

Moisture breeds other problems.

The waste of water and money are concerns, but there are also health concerns. The regular moisture in your faucet head creates the perfect conditions for mold. If the drip is in a rarely used sink, the area where the water drips in the sink can start to mold. And if you have a leaking line that is interrupting pressure to create the drip, then mold can form where your line is leaking.

Fixing that pesky drip can be quite simple and may only cost you a couple of dollars. Delaying it can mean more repairs, and water and money wasted. If it is something more than a simple fix, you don’t want to wait until you have a plumbing catastrophe from a broken pipe or mold.
